NICK Biography of a Determined Man Trailer

You can go on changing your husband or your wife a thousand and one times...

You can go on changing your husband or your wife a thousand and one times, you will again find the same type of woman and the same misery repeated in different forms – but the same misery repeated; it is almost the same. You can change your wife, but you are not changed. Now who is going to choose the other wife? You will choose. The choice will come out of your immaturity again. You will choose a similar type of woman again.

The basic problem of love is to first become mature, then you will find a mature partner; then immature people will not attract you at all. It is just like that. If you are twenty-five years of age, you don’t fall in love with a baby two years old, you don’t fall. Exactly like that. When you are a mature person psychologically, spiritually, you don’t fall in love with a baby. It does not happen, it CANNOT happen. You can see that it is going to be meaningless.

In fact a mature person does not fall in love, he rises in love. The word ’fall’ is not right. Only immature people fall; they stumble and fall down in love. Somehow they were managing and standing. They cannot manage and they cannot stand – they find a woman and they are gone, they find a man and they are gone. They were always ready to fall on the ground and to creep. They don’t have the backbone, the spine; they don’t have that integrity to stand alone.

A mature person has the integrity to be alone. And when a mature person gives love, he gives without any strings attached to it: he simply gives. And when a mature person gives love, he feels grateful that you have accepted his love, not vice versa. He does not expect you to be thankful for it – no, not at all, he does not even need your thanks. He thanks you for accepting his love. And when two mature persons are in love, one of the greatest paradoxes of life happens, one of the most beautiful phenomena: they are together and yet tremendously alone; they are together so much so that they are almost one. But their oneness does not destroy their individuality, in fact, it enhances it: they become more individual.

Two mature persons in love help each other to become more free. There is no politics involved, no diplomacy, no effort to dominate. How can you dominate the person you love? Just think over it. Domination is a sort of hatred, anger, enmity. How can you think of dominating a person you love? You would love to see the person totally free, independent; you will give him more individuality. That’s why I call it the greatest paradox: they are together so much so that they are almost one, but still in that oneness they are individuals. Their individualities are not effaced – they have become more enhanced. The other has enriched them as far as their freedom is concerned.

Immature people falling in love destroy each other’s freedom, create a bondage, make a prison. Mature persons in love help each other to be free; they help each other to destroy all sorts of bondages. And when love flows with freedom there is beauty. When love flows with dependence there is ugliness.

Remember, freedom is a higher value than love. That’s why in India, the ultimate we call MOKSHA; MOKSHA means freedom. Freedom is a higher value than love. So if love is destroying freedom, it is not of worth. Love can be dropped; freedom has to be saved: freedom is a higher value. And without freedom you can never be happy – that is not possible. Freedom is the intrinsic desire of each man, each woman – utter freedom, absolute freedom. So anything that becomes destructive to freedom – one starts hating it.

Don’t you hate the man you love? Don’t you hate the woman you love? You hate. It is a necessary evil; you have to tolerate it. Because you cannot be alone you have to manage to be with somebody, and you have to adjust to the other’s demands. You have to tolerate, you have to bear them. Love, to be really love, has to be ’being-love’, ’gift-love’. ’Being-love’ means a state of love. When you have arrived home, when you have known who you are, then a love arises in your being. Then the fragrance spreads and you can give it to others. How can you give something which you don’t have?

To give it, the first basic requirement is to have it.

Mindful eating

Mindful eating is very pleasant. We sit beautifully. We are aware of the people that are sitting around us. We are aware of the food on our plates. This is a deep practice. Each morsel of food is an ambassador from the cosmos. When we pick up a piece of a vegetable, we look at it for half a second. We look mindfully to really recognize the piece of food, the piece of carrot or string bean. We should know that this is a piece of carrot or a string bean. We identify it with our mindfulness: "I know this is a piece of carrot. This is a piece of string bean." It only takes a fraction of a second.

When we are mindful, we recognize what we are picking up. When we put it into our mouth, we know what we are putting into our mouth. When we chew it, we know what we are chewing. It's very simple.

Some of us, while looking at a piece of carrot, can see the whole cosmos in it, can see the sunshine in it, can see the earth in it. It has come from the whole cosmos for our nourishment.

You may like to smile to it before you put it in your mouth. When you chew it, you are aware that you are chewing a piece of carrot. Don't put anything else into your mouth, like your projects, your worries, your fear, just put the carrot in.

And when you chew, chew only the carrot, not your projects or your ideas. You are capable of living in the present moment, in the here and the now. It is simple, but you need some training to just enjoy the piece of carrot. This is a miracle.

I often teach "orange meditation" to my students. We spend time sitting together, each enjoying an orange. Placing the orange on the palm of our hand, we look at it while breathing in and out, so that the orange becomes a reality. If we are not here, totally present, the orange isn't here either.

There are some people who eat an orange but don't really eat it. They eat their sorrow, fear, anger, past, and future. They are not really present, with body and mind united.

When you practice mindful breathing, you become truly present. If you are here, life is also here. The orange is the ambassador of life. When you look at the orange, you discover that it is nothing less than fruit growing, turning yellow, becoming orange, the acid becoming sugar. The orange tree took time to create this masterpiece.

When you are truly here, contemplating the orange, breathing and smiling, the orange becomes a miracle. It is enough to bring you a lot of happiness. You peel the orange, smell it, take a section, and put it in your mouth mindfully, fully aware of the juice on your tongue. This is eating an orange in mindfulness. It makes the miracle of life possible. It makes joy possible.

Collecting rainwater now illegal in many states as Big Government claims ownership over our water...!

(Natural News) Many of the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S. are quickly eroding as the nation transforms from the land of the free into the land of the enslaved, but what I'm about to share with you takes the assault on our freedoms to a whole new level. You may not be aware of this, but many Western states, including Utah, Washington and Colorado, have long outlawed individuals from collecting rainwater on their own properties because, according to officials, that rain belongs to someone else.

As bizarre as it sounds, laws restricting property owners from "diverting" water that falls on their own homes and land have been on the books for quite some time in many Western states. Only recently, as droughts and renewed interest in water conservation methods have become more common, have individuals and business owners started butting heads with law enforcement over the practice of collecting rainwater for personal use.

Check out this YouTube video of a news report out of Salt Lake City, Utah, about the issue. It's illegal in Utah to divert rainwater without a valid water right, and Mark Miller of Mark Miller Toyota, found this out the hard way.

After constructing a large rainwater collection system at his new dealership to use for washing new cars, Miller found out that the project was actually an "unlawful diversion of rainwater." Even though it makes logical conservation sense to collect rainwater for this type of use since rain is scarce in Utah, it's still considered a violation of water rights which apparently belong exclusively to Utah's various government bodies.

"Utah's the second driest state in the nation. Our laws probably ought to catch up with that," explained Miller in response to the state's ridiculous rainwater collection ban.

Salt Lake City officials worked out a compromise with Miller and are now permitting him to use "their" rainwater, but the fact that individuals like Miller don't actually own the rainwater that falls on their property is a true indicator of what little freedom we actually have here in the U.S. (Access to the rainwater that falls on your own property seems to be a basic right, wouldn't you agree?)
Outlawing Rainwater Collection In Other States
Utah isn't the only state with rainwater collection bans, either. Colorado and Washington also have rainwater collection restrictions that limit the free use of rainwater, but these restrictions vary among different areas of the states and legislators have passed some laws to help ease the restrictions.

In Colorado, two new laws were recently passed that exempt certain small-scale rainwater collection systems, like the kind people might install on their homes, from collection restrictions.

Prior to the passage of these laws, Douglas County, Colorado, conducted a study on how rainwater collection affects aquifer and groundwater supplies. The study revealed that letting people collect rainwater on their properties actually reduces demand from water facilities and improves conservation.

Personally, I don't think a study was even necessary to come to this obvious conclusion. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that using rainwater instead of tap water is a smart and useful way to conserve this valuable resource, especially in areas like the West where drought is a major concern.

Additionally, the study revealed that only about three percent of Douglas County's precipitation ended up in the streams and rivers that are supposedly being robbed from by rainwater collectors. The other 97 percent either evaporated or seeped into the ground to be used by plants.

This hints at why bureaucrats can't really use the argument that collecting rainwater prevents that water from getting to where it was intended to go. So little of it actually makes it to the final destination that virtually every household could collect many rain barrels worth of rainwater and it would have practically no effect on the amount that ends up in streams and rivers.
It's all about control, really
As long as people remain unaware and uninformed about important issues, the government will continue to chip away at the freedoms we enjoy. The only reason these water restrictions are finally starting to change for the better is because people started to notice and they worked to do something to reverse the law.

Even though these laws restricting water collection have been on the books for more than 100 years in some cases, they're slowly being reversed thanks to efforts by citizens who have decided that enough is enough.

Because if we can't even freely collect the rain that falls all around us, then what, exactly, can we freely do? The rainwater issue highlights a serious overall problem inAmericatoday: diminishing freedom and increased government control.

Today, we've basically been reprogrammed to think that we need permission from the government to exercise our inalienable rights, when in fact the government is supposed to derive its powerfromus. The American Republic was designed so that government would serve the People to protect and uphold freedom and liberty. But increasingly, our own government is restricting people from their rights to engage in commonsense, fundamental actions such as collecting rainwater or buying raw milk from the farmer next door.

Today, we are living under a government that has slowly siphoned off our freedoms, only to occasionally grant us back a few limited ones under the pretense that they're doing us a benevolent favor.
Fight back against enslavement
As long as people believe their rights stem from the government (and not the other way around), they will always be enslaved. And whatever rights and freedoms we think we still have will be quickly eroded by a system of bureaucratic power that seeks only to expand its control.

Because the same argument that's now being used to restrict rainwater collection could, of course, be used to declare that you have no right to the air you breathe, either. After all, governments could declare that air to be somebody else's air, and then they could charge you an "air tax" or an "air royalty" and demand you pay money for every breath that keeps you alive.

Think it couldn't happen? Just give it time. The government already claims it owns your land and house, effectively. If you really think you own your home, just stop paying property taxes and see how long you still "own" it. Your county or city will seize it and then sell it to pay off your "tax debt." That proves who really owns it in the first place... and it's not you!

How about the question of who owns your body? According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark office, U.S. corporations and universities already own 20% of your genetic code. Your own body, they claim, is partially the property of someone else.

So if they own your land, your water and your body, how long before they claim to own your air, your mind and even your soul?

Unless we stand up against this tyranny, it will creep upon us, day after day, until we find ourselves totally enslaved by a world of corporate-government collusion where everything of value is owned by powerful corporations -- all enforced at gunpoint by local law enforcement.

The truth behind Kandahar

Was it really an ‘abject surrender’ by the NDA Government?

There have been innumerable communal riots in India, nearly all of them in States ruled by the Congress at the time of the violence, yet everybody loves to pretend that blood was shed in the name of religion for the first time in Gujarat in 2002 and that the BJP Government headed by Mr Narendra Modi must bear the burden of the cross.

Similarly, nobody remembers the various incidents of Indian Airlines aircraft being hijacked when the Congress was in power at the Centre, the deals that were struck to rescue the hostages, and the compromises that were made at the expense of India’s dignity and honour. But everybody remembers the hijacking of IC 814 and nearly a decade after the incident, many people still hold the BJP-led NDA Government responsible for the ‘shameful’ denouement.

The Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi, designated IC 814, with 178 passengers and 11 crew members on board, was hijacked on Christmas eve, 1999, a short while after it took-off from Tribhuvan International Airport; by then, the aircraft had entered Indian airspace. Nine years later to the day, with an entire generation coming of age, it would be in order to recall some facts and place others on record.

In 1999 I was serving as an aide to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the PMO, and I still have vivid memories of the tumultuous week between Christmas eve and New Year’s eve. Mr Vajpayee had gone out of Delhi on an official tour; I had accompanied him along with other officials of the PMO. The hijacking of IC 814 occurred while we were returning to Delhi in one of the two Indian Air Force Boeings which, in those days, were used by the Prime Minister for travel within the country.

Curiously, the initial information about IC 814 being hijacked, of which the IAF was believed to have been aware, was not communicated to the pilot of the Prime Minister’s aircraft. As a result, Mr Vajpayee and his aides remained unaware of the hijacking till reaching Delhi. This caused some amount of controversy later.

It was not possible for anybody else to have contacted us while we were in midair. It’s strange but true that the Prime Minister of India would be incommunicado while on a flight because neither the ageing IAF Boeings nor the Air India Jumbos, used for official travel abroad, had satellite phone facilities.

By the time our aircraft landed in Delhi, it was around 7:00 pm, a full hour and 40 minutes since the hijacking of IC 814. After disembarking from the aircraft in the VIP bay of Palam Technical Area, we were surprised to find National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra waiting at the foot of the ladder. He led Mr Vajpayee aside and gave him the news. They got into the Prime Minister’s car and it sped out of the Technical Area. Some of us followed Mr. Vajpayee to Race Course Road, as was the normal routine.

On our way to the Prime Minister’s residence, colleagues in the PMO provided us with the basic details. The Kathmandu-Delhi flight had been commandeered by five hijackers (later identified as Ibrahim Athar, resident of Bahawalpur, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Gulshan Iqbal, resident of Karachi, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, resident of Defence Area, Karachi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim, resident of Akhtar Colony, Karachi, and Shakir, resident of Sukkur City) at 5:20 pm; there were 189 passengers and crew members on board; and that the aircraft was heading towards Lahore.

At the Prime Minister’s residence, senior Ministers and Secretaries had already been summoned for an emergency meeting. Mr Mishra left for the crisis control room that had been set up at Rajiv Bhavan. In between meetings, Mr Vajpayee instructed his personal staff to cancel all celebrations planned for December 25, his birthday. The Cabinet Committee on Security met late into the night as our long vigil began.

Meanwhile, we were informed that the pilot of IC 814 had been denied permission to land at Lahore airport. With fuel running low, he was heading for Amritsar. Officials at Raja Sansi Airport were immediately alerted and told to prevent the plane from taking off after it had landed there.

The hijacked plane landed at Amritsar and remained parked on the tarmac for nearly 45 minutes. The hijackers demanded that the aircraft be refuelled. The airport officials ran around like so many headless chickens, totally clueless about what was to be done in a crisis situation.

Desperate calls were made to the officials at Raja Sansi Airport to somehow stall the refuelling and prevent the plane from taking off. The officials just failed to respond with alacrity. At one point, an exasperated Jaswant Singh, if memory serves me right, grabbed the phone and pleaded with an official, “Just drive a heavy vehicle, a fuel truck or a road roller or whatever you have, onto the runway and park it there.” But all this was to no avail.

The National Security Guards, whose job it is to deal with hostage situations, were alerted immediately after news first came in of IC 814 being hijacked; they were reportedly asked to stand by for any emergency. The Home Ministry was again alerted when it became obvious that after being denied permission to land at Lahore, the pilot was heading towards Amritsar.

Yet, despite IC 814 remaining parked at Amritsar for three-quarters of an hour, the NSG commandos failed to reach the aircraft. There are two versions as to why the NSG didn’t show up: First, they were waiting for an aircraft to ferry them from Delhi to Amritsar; second, they were caught in a traffic jam between Manesar and Delhi airport. The real story was never known!

The hijackers, anticipating commando action, first stabbed a passenger, Rupin Katyal (he had gone to Kathmandu with his newly wedded wife for their honeymoon; had they not extended their stay by a couple of days, they wouldn’t have been on the ill-fated flight) to show that they meant business, and then forced the pilot to take off from Amritsar. With almost empty fuel tanks, the pilot had no other option but to make another attempt to land at Lahore airport. Once again he was denied permission and all the lights, including those on the runway, were switched off. He nonetheless went ahead and landed at Lahore airport, showing remarkable skill and courage.

Mr Jaswant Singh spoke to the Pakistani Foreign Minister and pleaded with him to prevent the aircraft from taking off again. But the Pakistanis would have nothing of it (they wanted to distance themselves from the hijacking so that they could claim later that there was no Pakistan connection) and wanted IC 814 off their soil and out of their airspace as soon as possible. So, they refuelled the aircraft after which the hijackers forced the pilot to head for Dubai.

At Dubai, too, officials were reluctant to allow the aircraft to land. It required all the persuasive skills of Mr Jaswant Singh and our then Ambassador to UAE, Mr KC Singh, to secure landing permission. There was some negotiation with the hijackers through UAE officials and they allowed 13 women and 11 children to disembark. Rupin Katyal had by then bled to death. His body was offloaded. His widow remained a hostage till the end.

On the morning of December 25, the aircraft left Dubai and headed towards Afghanistan. It landed at Kandahar Airport, which had one serviceable runway, a sort of ATC and a couple of shanties. The rest of the airport was in a shambles, without power and water supply, a trophy commemorating the Taliban’s rule.

On Christmas eve, after news of the hijacking broke, there was stunned all-round silence. But by noon on December 25, orchestrated protests outside the Prime Minister’s residence began, with women beating their chests and tearing their clothes. The crowd swelled by the hour as the day progressed.

Ms Brinda Karat came to commiserate with the relatives of the hostages who were camping outside the main gate of 7, Race Course Road. In fact, she became a regular visitor over the next few days. There was a steady clamour that the Government should pay any price to bring the hostages back home, safe and sound. This continued till December 30.

One evening, the Prime Minister asked his staff to let the families come in so that they could be told about the Government’s efforts to secure the hostages’ release. By then negotiations had begun and Mullah Omar had got into the act through his ‘Foreign Minister’, Muttavakil. The hijackers wanted 36 terrorists, held in various Indian jails, to be freed or else they would blow up the aircraft with the hostages.

No senior Minister in the CCS was willing to meet the families. Mr Jaswant Singh volunteered to do so. He asked me to accompany him to the canopy under which the families had gathered. Once there, we were literally mobbed. He tried to explain the situation but was shouted down.

“We want our relatives back. What difference does it make to us what you have to give the hijackers?” a man shouted. “We don’t care if you have to give away Kashmir,” a woman screamed and others took up the refrain, chanting: “Kashmir de do, kuchh bhi de do, hamare logon ko ghar wapas lao.” Another woman sobbed, “Mera beta… hai mera beta…” and made a great show of fainting of grief.

To his credit, Mr Jaswant Singh made bold to suggest that the Government had to keep the nation’s interest in mind, that we could not be seen to be giving in to the hijackers, or words to that effect, in chaste Hindi. That fetched him abuse and rebuke. “Bhaand me jaaye desh aur bhaand me jaaye desh ka hit. (To hell with the country and national interest),” many in the crowd shouted back. Stumped by the response, Mr Jaswant Singh could merely promise that the Government would do everything possible.

I do not remember the exact date, but sometime during the crisis, Mr Jaswant Singh was asked to hold a Press conference to brief the media. While the briefing was on at the Press Information Bureau hall in Shastri Bhavan, some families of the hostages barged in and started shouting slogans. They were led by one Sanjiv Chibber, who, I was later told, was a ‘noted surgeon’: He claimed six of his relatives were among the hostages.

Dr Chibber wanted all 36 terrorists named by the hijackers to be released immediately. He reminded everybody in the hall that in the past terrorists had been released from prison to secure the freedom of Ms Rubayya Sayeed, daughter of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, while he was Home Minister in VP Singh’s Government. “Why can’t you release the terrorists now when our relatives are being held hostage?” he demanded. And then we heard the familiar refrain: “Give away Kashmir, give them anything they want, we don’t give a damn.”

On another evening, there was a surprise visitor at the PMO: The widow of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, whose plane was shot down during the Kargil war. She insisted that she should be taken to meet the relatives of the hostages. At Race Course Road, she spoke to mediapersons and the hostages’ relatives, explaining why India must not be seen giving in to the hijackers, that it was a question of national honour, and gave her own example of fortitude in the face of adversity.

“She has become a widow, now she wants others to become widows. Who is she to lecture us? Yeh kahan se aayi?” someone shouted from the crowd. Others heckled her. The young widow stood her ground, displaying great dignity and courage. As the mood turned increasingly ugly, she had to be led away. Similar appeals were made by others who had lost their sons, husbands and fathers in the Kargil war that summer. Col Virendra Thapar, whose son Lt Vijayant Thapar was martyred in the war, made a fervent appeal for people to stand united against the hijackers. It fell on deaf ears.

The media made out that the overwhelming majority of Indians were with the relatives of the hostages and shared their view that no price was too big to secure the hostages’ freedom. The Congress kept on slyly insisting, “We are with the Government and will support whatever it does for a resolution of the crisis and to ensure the safety of the hostages. But the Government must explain its failure.” Harkishen Singh Surjeet and other Opposition politicians issued similar ambiguous statements.

By December 28, the Government’s negotiators had struck a deal with the hijackers: They would free the hostages in exchange of three dreaded terrorists — Maulana Masood Azhar, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar and Ahmed Omar Sheikh — facing various charges of terrorism.

The CCS met frequently, several times a day, and discussed the entire process threadbare. The Home Minister, the Defence Minister and the Foreign Minister, apart from the National Security Adviser and the Prime Minister, were present at every meeting. The deal was further fine-tuned, the Home Ministry completed the necessary paper work, and two Indian Airlines aircraft were placed on standby to ferry the terrorists to Kandahar and fetch the hostages.

On December 31, the two aircraft left Delhi airport early in the morning. Mr Jaswant Singh was on board one of them. Did his ministerial colleagues know that he would travel to Kandahar? More important, was the Prime Minister aware of it? The answer is both yes and no.

Mr Jaswant Singh had mentioned his decision to go to Kandahar to personally oversee the release of hostages and to ensure there was no last-minute problem. He was honour-bound to do so, he is believed to have said, since he had promised the relatives of the hostages that no harm would come their way. It is possible that nobody thought he was serious about his plan. It is equally possible that others turned on him when the ‘popular mood’ and the Congress turned against the Government for its ‘abject surrender’.

On New Year’s eve, the hostages were flown back to Delhi. By New Year’s day, the Government was under attack for giving in to the hijackers’ demand! Since then, this ‘shameful surrender’ is held against the NDA and Mr Jaswant Singh is painted as the villain of the piece.

Could the Kandahar episode have ended any other way? Were an Indian aircraft to be hijacked again, would we respond any differently? Not really. As a nation we do not have the guts to stand up to terrorism. We cannot take hits and suffer casualties. We start counting our dead even before a battle has been won or lost. We make a great show of honouring those who die on the battlefield and lionise brave hearts of history, but we do not want our children to follow in their footsteps.

We are, if truth be told, a nation of cowards who don’t have the courage to admit their weakness but are happy to blame a well-meaning politician who, perhaps, takes his regimental motto of ‘Izzat aur Iqbal’ rather too seriously.

It is said about Chuang Tzu that when for the first time he entered the hut where Lao Tzu, his would- be master, was living, Lao Tzu looked at Chuang Tzu and said, ”Remember one thing, never ask me how to become enlightened.” The poor fellow had come for that very purpose. But Lao Tzu made it clear, ”Only on this condition will I accept you as my disciple.”

There was a moment of silence. Chuang Tzu thought, ”It is strange. I have come to become enlightened, that is the very purpose of becoming a disciple. And this old fellow, so beautiful and so graceful, is asking such an absurd thing: if you want to be my disciple, promise me that you will never ask about how to become enlightened.”

But it was already too late. He had fallen in love with the old man. He touched his feet and he said, ”I promise I will never ask how to become enlightened, but accept me as your disciple.”

Immediately came a hard slap, ”You idiot! If you are not going to become enlightened, then for what purpose are you becoming a disciple? I was asking this promise because I could see in you such beautiful intelligence that you might have immediately realized the point of my asking. You are enlightened; there is no way to become enlightened. There is no need. In fact even if you want to become unenlightened, there is no way.”

There have been masters like Bodhidharma. You ask him how to become enlightened and you will get such a good slap on your face that you will wake up immediately, saying, ”I am sorry, I had just fallen asleep. I am enlightened.” Those days were beautiful, when it was perfectly accepted that a master can slap the disciple. Now people have completely forgotten those beautiful moments and those beautiful days and those beautiful people.

All the meditations are nothing but an effort to feel your enlightenment – which is already the case; whether you feel it or not it does not matter. If you feel it you will rejoice, your life will become a dance, moment to moment, of tremendous glory and majesty, of grace and gratitude. If you don’t recognize it you will remain miserable, asking all kinds of idiots, frauds, ”How can I become enlightened?”

"Help! I'm going Crazy"...

Help Im Going Crazy

YOU DON’T HAVE TO STRUGGLE ANYMORE!
“Most people live lives of quiet desperation” George Bernard Shaw.

You don’t have to be one of those people. Have you ever wondered why some people live such wonderful, happy lives while countless thousands struggle along in terrible situations with insurmountable problems, relationship problems, child problems, social problems, work problems, personal problems?

It is because most people lack BASIC LIFE SKILLS AND COPING STRATEGIES. These skills should be taught in schools, parents ought to know them, teachers, adults and old people ought to know them, but most don’t.

Have you ever been given bad advice or brainless reasoning by the well intended? It is because they don’t know, they really don’t know, and more serious is the fact that that they don’t know they don’t know. People are all full of well intended wisdom they’ve sucked out of their thumb, off the top of their head, but if you look at their own lives, they’re no better off than you. How many people do you know who don’t take their own advice, yet they so willingly dish it out generously to others? Common sense would dictate that if you want good advice, get it from professionals who’ve been there, who actually do know what they’re talking about. Going to the wrong people for advice can often make your problems much worse.

It is estimated that two out of every three people suffer or will suffer some form of chronic misery or mental illness at some point during their life time. This includes chronic stress, depression, panic attacks, insomnia or nightmares, despair, bi polar disorder, social dysfunctions, phobias, rage, inability to cope and all the other mental and emotional problems you’ve heard about so often or gone through your self. One in ten suffer one or more of these regularly or on an ongoing basis. Drugs often only anesthetise the problem or mask the symptoms providing only temporary relief. Even the drugs that provide permanent relief usually have some hectic unwanted or severe side effects. You can prevent it and you can learn to solve the problems that cause it and heal your self and your life.

WHY DON’T PEOPLE SIMPLY LEARN THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO COPE?

Because most people don’t know the skills are out there. The skills ARE out there and they are being used by those who are living happy, successful lives. Some people have learned the skills through books, tapes and seminars, and some have employed a skilled and experienced Life Coach, and some found out the hard way through many years of painful experience and some were just born lucky with the natural talent. Fortunately, many of those who found the way, or found a way, have written about it or speak about it and teach others.

YOU CAN EASILY LEARN THESE SKILLS TOO!

And you don’t have to learn the hard way or the expensive way, you can learn the easy way, and it is easier than you might have thought. You don’t have to read hundreds of different self help books and listen to dozens of CD sets and tape sets or attend dozens of expensive self help seminars. This has all been done for you, and it has all been condensed into one easy to read book. Terri Ann has been there, learned the hard way and then also read all the books, listened to all the CDs and tapes, watched all the DVDs, attended dozens of seminars and studied it all to become a successful International Trainer and Speaker and a Professional Therapist and Life Coach. She has condensed it all into one simple, easy-to-read book for you.

“When I first learned all these skills I was bowled over and laughed at myself because so many of them were such blindingly obvious facts that I could hardly believe I missed them! That is the problem with the blindingly obvious – we are totally blind to it. It is like searching for the salt that is right in front of your eyes, or searching for your glasses that are on top of your head. It isn’t rocket science, but it might as well be because we get so caught up in seeing things in a certain way, and we’re so fixed on searching for some miracle out there, that the one right under our very noses, the obvious other route is the last thing we’d think to see”.
So many people have written to us telling us their stories. Some letters were pages and pages long! Here is just a sample bit of what some people have said: (responses from people who read the manuscript before publishing)

"Thank God I found this book! It is saving me a fortune on therapy and it’s actually working. I was in therapy for 2 years and this book is solving all the problems my Therapist couldn’t.”

"I’m a psychologist and Terri Ann’s fresh new ideas and new take on old ideas and new ways of seeing things has increased my success rate. I’ve made a lot of changes to how I deal with patients.”

“I got my husband to read it, and his patience and compassion for me has quadrupled. It has brought us so much closer.”

“I buy and read a lot of books. This is the first book ever that I bought that my teenage daughter read!”
“After I read the book, I realised that my wife’s mother really needs it too, so I bought her a copy. She likes me a whole lot more now.”

“I wish this book was around five years ago. I know it would have prevented my retrenchment and my subsequent divorce.”

“I’ve wanted to start my own business for years but lacked the courage to make that leap. After reading the book, the world is mine, it always was but I didn’t know it, and now I’m planning my big break and I’m excited not scared.”

“I spent so many years fighting with my mother and suffered untold misery due to our totally dysfunctional relationship, and half way through the book, I just burst out laughing as I realised what I was doing. I went right over there and had one conversation with her and ripped the problem right out by its root. We’ve been fantastic friends ever since. It is amazing. I can’t think why it never occurred to me to do that before. I totally missed the one little thing, the vital key to everything. Now I tell everyone who has similar problems.”

“I was a devoted hard worker and bosses were so quick to notice and take advantage. I was under paid and over worked for 9 years and eventually began to suffer Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was booked off work. I had 4 different jobs in those 9 years and concluded that ‘bosses were like that’. When I read the book and realised I was creating my problem, it knocked my socks off. I read the book twice and it filled me with so much hope and motivation and enthusiasm that I went out and got another job. I don’t do ‘that’ anymore, and now I am still a devoted hard worker, but I make sure I’m appreciated and well paid for it.”

“I read the book too late. My wife had already left and the bitter fighting over who gets what in the divorce was in full swing. If only I’d got the book a year or two sooner I know I could have saved my marriage. At least I was able to put a stop to the childish tit for tat madness that had been ruining both of our lives, and come to a friendly amicable agreement. I thought I’d never, ever marry again, but now I realise that I can do it differently next time. I have much more choices of response now than I had, and I have more control over outcomes. I’ll create my next relationship on purpose and not just hope it turns out OK.”

“I could never get anything right. I could never understand why I was such an idiot, such a wimp, such a failure, such a fool. I used to hate myself sometimes and despair of myself. I suffered so much remorse, guilt, self condemnation and regret that I don’t even know how I managed to live with myself. I was riddled with complexes. I can hardly believe now that I was like that. What was I thinking? It is almost like that was another me. I’ve really been re-born in a way, awakened. I have found myself and you know what? I actually like myself. It’s true, I do.”

“I was relieved to find the book totally non religious. The previous self help book I got out of the library was good in many ways but it kept referring to religious principles of the author and quotes from his religious text. I’m not prejudiced against anyone’s religion, but it is hard to relate to good words if it comes from a religious vantage point that is different from ones own religious views. It was so helpful to get basic good advice and step by step instructions from a safe place, and I mean safe for all religious people and even for atheists or agnostics too. When you are a devoted spiritual person like I am, you have to be careful what you read.”

“I’m a teacher and I have found the book invaluable. Not only am I getting amazing headway with the kids, I’m also getting on better with their parents. I was beginning to hate teaching, but now I’m enjoying it again.”

“I’ve always been a very generous, helpful, giving person, and I’ve been hurt so many times by ungrateful people who have stabbed me in the back. As soon as I read the chapter on ‘Giving to the ungrateful’, I understood why, and I know how to make sure that never happens again. I can see it so clearly now.”

The First Historical Example Of A Pyramid Scheme…

The First Historical Example Of A Pyramid Scheme…

Was a scam carried out by the government of France? Oops!
The first famous pyramid scheme occurred in the early eighteenth century in France. What you’re about to read goes down as one of the greatest deceptions in history.
king_louis.gif
Near the end of King Louis’ XIV reign (1643 to 1715) the economy of France was on a steep  decline. The country was 3 billion livres in debt. Officials debated whether the government should just declare bankruptcy and start from scratch, but the politicians of the time feared revolution and looked instead for a more expedient solution.

Their first attempt to remedy the problem was to devalue the currency through recoinage (the making of new coins). New gold and silver coins were issued weighing 20% less than coins already in circulation but with the same face value, and the public was ordered by law to make the exchange. The government planned to use the extra gold and silver they saved from the new coins to pay off the nation’s debt.

But the people of France weren’t to be fooled by devalued coins. They refused to exchange their gold and silver for currency that was intrinsically less valuable. This foiled scheme greatly discredited the government of France and worsened the economic depression.

After King Louis’ XIV death, the Regent Duc d’Orleans appointed Scottish economist John Law as Controller General of France.. (A Regent is someone who rules a country temporarily due to the absence of a Monarch.) Together the Regent and Law formulated a brilliant scheme to pay off the national debt.
johnlaw.jpg
First, the Regent of France authorized Law to establish a central bank under the name of Law and Company. (A central bank is a nation’s principal monetary authority: in the United States it’s known as the Federal Reserve, while in the United Kingdom it’s called the Bank of England.)

Second, the Regent authorized Law’s bank to issue bank notes (paper money) INSTEAD of real gold and silver coins and decreed that the paper money would be accepted for the payment of taxes. This gave Law and his bank notes a measure of credibility.

Third, Law knew he had to gain public confidence in his bank notes for the entire scheme to work. He immediately announced that all notes from his bank were payable in coin, meaning that his bank notes could be exchanged for their face value in gold or silver.

This gave the appearance that the paper money was the same value of the gold coin! This was perhaps the greatest deception of the 18th century.

Because of the discomfort of carrying coins around in their pocket, people preferred to carry the paper currency. Therefore, the public would deposit their gold and silver into the bank in exchange for a piece of paper. This practice is just as common today, people put their coins in a jar because the coins are too heavy to carry around. Once the jar gets full, they take it to the bank (or even the local grocery store) and cash in their coins for paper money.

The entire scheme required people to believe in the credibility of Law’s bank and his ability to redeem his notes in coins. Once that belief was established, the paper money was literally “as good as gold.”

As more and more people cashed in their gold in exchange for paper, the bank’s vault filled with gold.

Now I need to explain how banking began in order to complete this explanation.

In the early days, there was no such thing as credit. If you wanted to buy something, you carried your gold or silver coins to the store and paid in coin. People didn’t want to have their coins in their home or on their person when traveling for fear of being robbed, so they would keep their coins in a bank’s
vault. As more and more people put their coins in banks, the bank’s vault would fill up.

Banks recognized that at no time did EVERYONE pull ALL their gold out of the bank simultaneously, so they loaned out depositors’ gold for short periods of time. This was the birth of “credit & loans.”
John Law learned of “credit & loans” working in his father’s bank. Now, for the first time we have “credit” as a financial tool.

This is where the pyramid concept comes into play. Because of my divergence into banking and credit, let me recap to ensure you’re still following all of this…

The country of France wanted to pay its debt through recoinage, which failed. Economist John Law, a man with extensive banking experience, encouraged citizens to deposit their gold and silver in his bank in exchange for paper money. The government added credibility to the paper money by declaring Law’s bank a central bank and accepting the paper money as payment for tax debts... The scheme worked… for a while.

The Law and Company’s bank received enormous sums of gold to store in its vault. With all that gold in the vault the bank could issue loans…. but the loans would be made in paper money rather than in coin.
This was the magician’s act. The real product, gold and silver, vanished and the fake product, paper money, was now in the spotlight. This seems a lot like current times, doesn’t it?

THE BANK BECOMES A PYRAMID SCHEME

The Regent made Law’s bank a publicly-traded company and declared it the Royal Bank of France. Now people could buy stock in the government’s bank as well as receive credit in the form of bank loans. Over the course of a few years, the bank issued over one billion livres in paper currency to the public.

Keep in mind that all of these paper loans and paper stocks were based on the real product of gold and silver coins in the vault. You see, once the magician got you to believe that the paper was as good as gold, he didn’t need to show you the gold any more.

Businesses rushed to the Royal Bank of France to secure loans, with which they expanded commerce both at home and abroad. Foreign countries could not cash the paper money from France, so they required payment in gold and silver. Slowly but surely, the gold and silver that backed the paper-money loans began to drain out of France and into other countries. With the bank issuing so many loans, the people of France began to suspect that the gold and silver backing their paper money was disappearing. Depositors quietly began converting their paper money to coins and transporting the coins to foreign banks. By 1720 the scarcity of coin began to increase. The vaults, once filled with gold and silver, were becoming empty, but the paper money was still being loaned out.

In an effort to stop people from converting their paper money into gold and silver coins, the government depreciated the coin’s value to 10% below the paper, and the bank continued to limit the amount of coins any one person could receive. The limit was 100 livres in gold and 10 livres in silver. The government was now claiming that gold and silver was worth less than the paper!

In February of 1720 John Law made a fatal error. At his suggestion to the Regent, a decree was issued forbidding anyone to hold more than 500 livres in coin and prohibiting people from buying up precious stones, jewelry, silver settings, and so forth. The penalty was a heavy fine and confiscation of the
holdings. The government was desperate to hold onto the gold and silver that backed the currency loaned out and sold as stock. This enraged the public. In May of 1720 the bank was out of gold and silver in the vaults and was forced to stop making payments in coin. The bubble burst and the pyramid collapsed. John Law, once a national hero, became the scapegoat for the entire crisis. The government of France blamed him for the whole debacle and he was nearly murdered by angry crowds.

However, today no well-established currencies (US Dollar, Pound, Yen, etc.) are backed by gold or any other real product. To prevent another such crisis, most countries adopted the gold standard and required that banks have sufficient gold to back the paper currency they lent out.

Their worth is based on “belief.” The governments can - and do - create money out of thin air by simply printing more. The governments can - and do - devalue their currency at will. This is no different then the famous financial scam you’ve just read about.

Oops...

What’s the point is sharing this with you?

I want to show you that pyramid schemes have nothing to do with MLM.

A scam is a scam because the person perpetrating it is trying to trick someone. In what you just read, the government was trying to trick the people into believing that paper money was the same as gold. The government’s intention was to create money with no production or product.

The basis of legitimate business is products consumed by customers that make their lives better. If you understand this at its fundamental level, you will never fall victim to a pyramid scheme because you can recognize it for what it is.
